How many times have you stepped into the gym, laced up your running shoes, and felt... meh? 😒 I remember it vividly, standing in that packed gym, surrounded by the clang of weights and the grunts of exertion, feeling utterly... empty. The iron had lost its allure. The numbers on the plates had become meaningless. It was like going through the motions of a relationship long past its expiration date.
But that was then. Back then, I was all about consuming calories – the more, the better. Somehow, being 'big' equated to success in my mind. I was chasing someone else's story, fueled by muscle magazine ideals. I didn't realise it then, but I was disconnecting from my own truth, from what truly resonated with me.
Discovering the Flow
But then, a spark ignited. A world where strength wasn't just about bulging biceps and plates piled high. On YouTube, I saw lean, powerful bodies moving with incredible fluidity and control. I could almost feel the energy radiating from them... They weren't just lifting weights; they were flowing, expressing themselves through movement. It was like watching gymnasts defy gravity, and it lit me up inside. This was what I'd been missing.
It wasn't just about the aesthetics. I craved meaning in my training. Back then, my training was aimless – protein shake, heavy lifting, repeat. But these calisthenics athletes, they seemed to have a different purpose. They were pushing boundaries, exploring the limits of human potential. And deep down, I knew that's what I yearned for too.
Early Struggles
But the journey wasn't without its challenges. Calisthenics demanded a whole new level of body awareness and control. My first attempts at even basic movements like handstands and L-sits were humbling, to say the least. Picture a baby giraffe on roller skates trying to navigate an ice rink. "Nothing to see here!" 😂
Physically, my forearms burned, my core screamed, and muscles I didn't even know existed were suddenly making their presence known. My body, used to the predictable strain of bench presses and lat pull-downs, was now being challenged in entirely new ways. Remember those heavy weighted lat pull-downs? Suddenly, a single strict pull-up felt like an impossible dream.
But the physical discomfort was nothing. It was the mental battle that truly tested me. That insidious voice whispering, 'Why can't you even do one pull-up? What's wrong with you?' It chipped away at my confidence, making each failed attempt sting even more.
And here's the crucial point: that negative self-talk wasn't just an inconvenience; it was actively hindering my progress. A negative mindset 🧠 can trigger a chain reaction of physiological responses, including the release of stress hormones like cortisol. Elevated cortisol levels can interfere with muscle protein synthesis, compromise recovery, and disrupt sleep patterns. It's a self-sabotaging cycle, where your own thoughts and emotions create a biochemical environment that works against your physical goals.
These early struggles, both physical and mental, forced me to confront my limitations and dig deeper than ever before.
Finding My Why

Through calisthenics, I finally understood that fitness wasn't just about aesthetics or external validation. Now, here's a crucial piece of the puzzle that often gets overlooked: enjoyment. Yes, you read that right. Enjoyment.
